Car Transport Insurance
Once you have all of your estimates for shipping your car you'll want to compare insurance coverage as it will help you choose which car transport service to use. Specifically, you'll want to check the amount of coverage that the car shipping company has to offer in the unlikely event that something happens to your vehicle while it's in the shipper's possession.
Most reliable car transport companies carry some form of cargo protection for your vehicle.
When you're out shopping car transport services and trying to make a decision on whom to select, the amount of auto transport insurance provided could be an important factor to consider. Your car insurance policy may also afford you some protection during shipment, so check to see which coverage would be primary - meaning which policy pays first in the event of a covered claim where both policies provide coverage. Whichever insurance policy is primary will pay first and any excess policies are designed to pick up the slack after the first company pays. Contact your car insurance agent or company for specifics on what your auto insurance policy covers and what it doesn't cover if you ship your vehicle and sustain loss or damages.
Once you have a clear picture of what coverage you already have available, you may also consider purchasing a supplemental insurance policy on your vehicle that will be in effect only during the shipment - especially if you need to ship a highly valuable vehicle, such as a classic car or vehicle used for racing. Some car transport services may also provide this type of additional coverage, in which case it will be added to the auto transport companies fees. Your own insurance company might offer temporary supplemental insurance as well. Be sure to read the fine print about exclusions, check your deductible and know what the coverage limits are.
Remember to take any personal items our of your car, truck, SUV, motorhome or boat before it's picked up by the transport company. Auto shipping service companies don't cover things that remain in your vehicle because, by law, they're not allowed to transport them. Additionally, you'll find that your car and home or renters policy generally doesn't offer much protection for these items anyway.
Get everything in writing and don't trust oral promises. Information about insurance and coverage provisions that apply to damages during car transport should be a part of your written auto transport company contract.
Moving Company Car Transport
If you end up transporting your car with household movers instead of a vehicle specialty companies, any insurance coverage or movers valuation agreement may not be the same as standard car transport insurance, so check into coverage carefully with your mover.

Car Transport Insurance Claims
When it comes time to take delivery of your car the shipping company driver will inspect it for damages in the presence of either you or your designated representative. You will be asked to sign a completed report of your car's condition after shipping. Look over the report carefully to make sure that you agree with the comments and notes contained on it before you sign this document.
If you need to report damage under an insurance policy, do it promptly. If the damage wasn't listed in your delivery report you won't have much luck claiming your car was damaged during shipment.
